Costume Designer

Stage Manager. I am in ninth grade, and I acted as a stage manager and costume manager.  I love acting and working in productions, especially when the play choice is this spectacular.  I am so proud of our wonderful cast and crew, and I can't wait for you all to see our work on The Crucible.

Stage Manager/Susanna Walcott. I love theatre!  I find it fun and enjoying, and taking the challenge of memorizing lines and performing in front of an audience is what I like. I've been in several Newark Academy productions before, such as the musicals: Urinetown, Grease, and On the Town (in that order). I plan to audition for this year's musical, and hope to be able to participate in next year's upper school fall drama. As well as theatre, I also enjoy horse-back riding in my free time.

Director. Rachel joined Newark Academy this year as the Director of Theatre. Rachel received her BFA in Acting from Carnegie Mellon University, School of Drama which included study at the Moscow Art Theatre school (MXAT). She completed her MA in Educational Theatre at NYU. Commercially, Rachel has worked as an actress and casting associate in theatre and television. For the past 8 years she developed arts curriculum and led arts teachers in such networks as Uncommon Schools and KIPP:NJ.

Joseph Yow serves as the Technical Director and Film Teacher at Newark Academy. In his seven year career working in independent schools, he has had the pleasure of designing such shows as The Tempest, Eurydice, Twelfth Night, Middletown, The Drowsy Chaperone, and On The Town. Outside of teaching, Joseph Yow directs for non-profit theatre companies, and his most recent credits include August: Osage County, The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail, a female-led ensemble in Julius Caesar, and an all-female

Music Consultant. VIRAJ LAL has been the Choral Director at Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ since 2007. He holds a Master of Music Education degree from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Rutgers University. Viraj has studied conducting with Dr. Andre Thomas, Dr. Patrick Gardner, and Dr. Kevin Fenton. Viraj is proud to direct 9 vocal ensembles at NA, including their top varsity choir Academy Voices.
