About A Midsummer Night's Dream

The play takes place in Athens, Greece -- where everything is going wrong. Egeus is having trouble with his daughter, Hermia who is refusing to marry the man he promised her to, Demetrius, so he brings her to the Duke for judgement. She doesn’t want to marry him, but Lysander, the poet, who also loves her. Hermia and Lysander decide to run away together and disappear into the forest. Demetrius follows to bring Hermia back, and Helena, his former fiancé, whom he dumped, pursues him relentlessly despite his admonishments. Meanwhile, Oberon, King of the Fairies and Titania, Queen of the fairies, are fighting over a boy she agreed to watch over. She defies Oberon, and jealous of the attention she is paying the boy, he calls on the mischievous sprite Puck, to seek revenge on Titania and teach Demetrius some manners. But Puck messes up the assignment, giving Oberon’s love potion to the wrong lover, causing them all misery, and transforming an actor into a donkey, and the Queen to fall in love with him. The play ends happily, as each couple finds their true love, and Titania and Bottom are restored to normal, when Oberon reverses the magical mischief.
