About The Drowsy Chaperone

The Drowsy Chaperone is a wickedly funny comedy within a comedy!

The Man in Chair, a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his "non-specific sadness", listens to a recording of the fictional 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens to this rare recording, the characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is transformed into an impressive Broadway set with seashell footlights, sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes. Man in Chair provides a running commentary throughout the show from the stage, though he is on the audience side of the fourth wall, invisible to the players.

With every stock character and actor thrown into an ensemble of crazy events, this show will crack you up as well as bring a tear to your eye.

WARNING ... THE DROWSY CHAPERONE INCLUDES MANY PURPOSEFULLY RACIAL AND CULTURAL INSENSITIVITIES.  THIS IS NOT TO OFFEND YOU, THE AUDIENCE, BUT TO POINT OUT JUST HOW RIDICULOUS THE REFERENCES ARE AND HOW FAR WE'VE COME (OR NEED TO COME) FROM DAYS WHEN THOSE KINDS OF COMMENTS, NAMES AND ATTITUDES WERE OFTEN ACCEPTABLE.

About The Department

The Berkley High School Drama Department - Be Drama as we're known - owes a wealth of gratitude to a fearless leader who offered to help out and was thrust into the Director's chair when District Drama Coordinator, John Hopkins, had a heart attack and needed to recuperate.  Mr. Harry Totten, English Department Student Teacher and now Director of Be Drama's The Drowsy Chaperone is an absolute Godsend.  From the bottom of all of our hearts, Mr. Totten, we salute you.  We appreciate you.  We couldn't have done it without you!
