About Once on This Island

Once on This Island is a one-act musical written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. It is based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy. The story takes place in the French Antilles and combines elements of the stories Romeo and Juliet and The Little Mermaid. Once on This Island follows the tale of a peasant girl on an island, who uses love to bring together people of different social classes.

The award-winning musical originally opened on Broadway in 1990 and ran until 1991, with the West End production opening in 1994. It won the 1995 Olivier Award for Best New Musical and is currently revived on Broadway after opening in December of 2017. Recently, Once on This Island, has won the Tony Award for Best Revival.
