Sunny Side Theater

Drama Camp Productions & Sunny Side Theater was founded in 2002 by Chris Paragone.  Chris and his counselors were able to put on a full-length show complete with costumes, set, props, and a cast of 20 kids.  At the end of the 2007-2008 school year, Chris decided it was time to turn his “summer hobby” into a year-round passion!  Sunny Side Theater opened its year-round facility in the Fall of 2008 with the goal of allowing all children access to the stage.  The confidence and long-lasting skills that performing arts offered children was something Chris felt strongly about and he didn’t want to turn anyone away because of talent - but rather work with them on their level.  Over 100 kids participated in shows and classes that first year.  The next summer, camp expanded again to 5 sessions and the following school year saw the addition of an October show to compliment December and spring offerings.  In 2011, Sunny Side added a high school show because many of the students who made up Chris’s first casts of Drama Camp wanted to continue participating, but at a more mature level.   In 2012, Sunny Side expanded into the Azalea City Center for the Arts - a full-service, one-stop shop for all arts programs - music, drama, visual arts, dance, and more.  Chris expanded the program once more to offer an Exceptional Arts Drama Class for those with special needs and they produce three shows a year.  In 2014, Sunny Side grew again with the addition of its Travel Competition Team.  In 2017, Sunny Side was awarded Best Ensemble at the Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta and in 2016 Chris was named a Freddie G Fellowship recipient. The staff at Sunny Side has grown to include co-director Lauren Westbrook.   In 2017, the Sunny Side program grew again with the addition of a travelling Homeschool show that performs at local elementary schools across Mobile County to bring a show and drama lesson to thousands of children who would not otherwise have access.  Under the direction of Chris and Lauren, Sunny Side also travels to local schools to direct school-wide musicals, serving hundreds more children.  Last year also saw the addition of a K-5 musical to allow younger kids the chance to shine as leads. Chris has 5 children who are all involved in the theater as well!  Sunny Side is known for their policy of inclusion, having never refused a student a part in a show for any reason!
