About The Wizard of Oz

Published in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz reflected America’s distinct brand of plucky idealism, imagination, and innovation. Woven throughout the story were the universal themes of good versus evil and the small and weak triumphing over the cruel and powerful. Baum also drew attention to the idea that people have a longing to be seen and valued for their unique talents. These ideas resonated with readers and the book sold out its first run of 10,000 copies in eight months. It would go on to sell a total of three million copies before it fell into the public domain in 1956. It has been translated or adapted into well over fifty languages and ultimately named by the Library of Congress as the first American fantasy for children and one of the most-read children's books. At the time of Baum’s death in 1919, the 13th Oz book, The Magic of Oz, was on its way to press and the final, completed manuscript, Glinda of Oz, was published in 1920. But the magic of Oz didn’t end with the books.

In 1939, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released its technicolor masterpiece The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland. Twenty years later, CBS began annual broadcasts of the movie and a beloved tradition was born. In 1975, “The Wiz” lit up Broadway and ‘eased on down the road’ with seven Tony Awards®, including Best Musical. The Wiz was also given the movie treatment in 1978 with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson in starring roles. In 2003, the musical Wicked pulled back the emerald curtain for a glimpse of what happened before Dorothy dropped into Oz, and 10 years later, Oz the Great and Powerful explored the origins of how Oz came into existence.

No matter the medium, Baum and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has left an indelible imprint on the American imagination. One that still sparkles with hope and inspiration as bright as Dorothy’s ruby slippers.     Click here for our program: http://bit.ly/OCS-wizardofoz and be sure to check out the Cast Bios and Pictures by clicking on CAST in the top menu bar on this page.
