About Big Fish

Big Fish is a beautiful story that means a lot to me. It surrounds the conflict between a father (Edward) and son (Will) who see the world differently and struggle to understand each other. About to become a father himself, Will goes home to make a last effort to understand his father as Edward is dying of cancer.  Throughout are various representations of Edward's past--the miraculous and unbelievable life he lived.  In the end, Will learns that Edward's stories (and how he often exaggerated them) were all intended to inspire Will to see that no matter how simple or complex his life may be, it could be lived extraordinarily.

This play is all about living the best lives we can and finding joy in the journey we take with those we love. It's about the power we have as individuals to touch the lives of those around us. We all have an incredible responsibility as members of the human race to do our best because, whether we see it or not, we have a hand in shaping the lives of those we know, and they return the favor. In the original book Big Fish written by Daniel Wallace, one character describes how he feels about the way Edward touched everyone's lives: "We all have stories.... Lots of stories, big and small. They all add up. Over a lifetime it all adds up.... We're a part of him, of who he is, just as he is a part of us."

I know that we do not live our lives alone--that our stories blend into the stories of others and that we take part in making the world what it is. I hope that you will all remember the power you have and be the heroes of your stories.
