About Flux & The Obelisk

Student written work is important to Bethel and these two premieres are written by current Bethel student Autumn Owens.  Both shows deal with various forms of death and are not suitable for younger audiences.

Flux and the Obelisk will have limited in person seating and will give you, the attendance, a unique view of the show as you witness both the live stream video and the behind the scenes needed to produce the show.

FLUX

What do you do when you find yourself in a strange other-world with no
memories of your life or how you got there? With the help of two others, a
young woman must remember the event that took her to Flux--and find a way
to get back out.

THE OBELISK
Their leader has promised them everything they never had: a safe home, a loving
community, a caring family. All he asks is that they dedicate their lives to building
a monument for the people’s glory. But when July starts exploring life outside
the gates, the leader’s charade begins to crumble.

Director's Notes

It has become increasingly difficult to read any sort of modern media that doesn't mention or try to provide some intellectual insight into the global pandemic we have all found ourselves caught in this last year. I just want to say that this crew, cast, and I are extremely thankful to be creating in these unprecedented times. Honestly, I'm tired of using those phrases to describe our current situation maybe I'll use these uncertain times? This new normal? These trying times? However you wish to describe COVID-19, the longer we find ourselves in this predicament the harder it becomes to find ways to escape anxiety, news cycles, and the perpetual fear in the air. Through it all, I hope we can offer you some entertainment, helping you think just a little deeper about life and those around you. Within the limitations we were given, we want to remind you, the audience, the wonder and awe that comes with live theatre.

I hope you’ll be able to enjoy this production as much as I’ve enjoyed the process of directing it.

Adam Foster

As we reflect on the events of the past year, various emotions and thoughts surface. One might even say the year has been an in-between place or that we have been in flux. While watching our production of Flux, you will be transported into another world in flux. As a director, I deeply enjoy collaborating with others to bring shows to life on stage, and being the first to breathe life into a new script brings an added excitement. Autumn Owen's talents are seen in the scripts of Flux and Obelisk, and Bethel's Theatre Department is proud to produce two shows written by one of their own students. Collaborating with new artists brings a fresh perspective to any show and not only was I able to collaborate with a new playwright, but I was also able to work with a new student director, Adam Foster. I appreciate his willingness to think outside the box or rather inside the box for the production of Obelisk. Creating a theatre experience during a pandemic stretched us both and required us to embrace a spirit of flexibility and creativity.

We want to welcome you to the production of Flux and Obelisk and hope you enjoy this adventure into a unique theatre experience!
