About Rent School Edition

In light of the COVID-19 virus, concerns for the health of our community, and recommendations from public health officials, the Arcata Arts Institute is postponing our production of RENT School Edition until a later date.  We are hoping to open on April 30, and run our show through May 9, however, we also understand that this proposal will need to be reassessed as that date approaches to ensure we are following all recommendations from our public health experts.

The Arcata Arts Institute presents RENT School Edition, a rock musical with music, lyrics, and book by Jonathan Larson, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize and four-time Tony Award winning play Rent.  Based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème, RENT School Edition tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan's East Village, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Directed by Melanie Zapper, with musical direction by Jo Kuzelka, RENT School Edition tackles topics of gentrification, substance abuse, healthy relationships, and most importantly, love.  This version, while specifically adapted to be suitable for the high school stage, does contain mature themes and language.  As such, we highly recommend audience members be over the age of 13, or with guardian permission. With musical arrangements by Steve Skinner, original concept and additional lyrics by Billy Aronson, and Lynn Thomson as the dramaturg, RENT School Edition runs March 26 thru 27, and April 2 thru 4 at 7:00pm with a matinee showing on March 28 at 2:00pm. Join us for our Opening Night Special, $5 students/seniors, $8 general admission. All other performances $12 students/seniors, $15 general admission.  Advanced tickets will be available online or in person at Wildberries.

Rent- School Edition is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
